Peptides vs Retinoids: Which Does More for Aging Skin?
Peptides and retinoids are two of the most prominent categories in clinical skincare for aging. Both are legitimately evidence-backed. Both target collagen and skin structure. The question of which is "better" is less useful than understanding what each does and why the combination outperforms either alone.
The case for retinoids
Prescription tretinoin has the strongest evidence base of any topical ingredient for structural skin change. The mechanisms are well characterised:

The case for peptides
Signal peptides (matrikines) work through a different mechanism: they mimic the collagen breakdown fragments that naturally signal fibroblasts to produce more collagen. The best-studied — palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (Matrixyl), palmitoyl tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 — have clinical evidence for:
Increased collagen I, III, and IV production
Increased hyaluronic acid synthesis
Reduction in fine line depth over 4–8 weeks of consistent use
